Go ahead. Get mad!

I'm a diabetes educator. One of the first things I ask my clients is "How do you feel about having diabetes?" I love it when they tell me they're angry. WHY? Because it tells me they're not in denial.

Denial is an understandable, but dangerous reaction to being diagnosed with diabetes. Denial can be deadly. I know a lady who was told she had "borderline" diabetes many years ago. In the years that followed, she never admitted she had the "real diabetes". At the end of her life she was on dialysis and faced the imminent amputation of both legs.

That lady was my mom. I work very hard to help my clients get past their denial. It really IS a matter of life and death!
