Low Blood Sugars

Are you feeling “Low”? The symptoms of low blood sugar vary widely. Sometimes a person is not even aware their blood sugar is low.  Other times a person can become unconscious.

In between those two extremes, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

·         Shaking

·         Sweating

·         Irritability

·         Poor concentration

·         Blurred vision

·         Fast heart rate

·         Hunger

·         Headache

·         Dizziness

·         Confusion

·         Acting  silly

What should you do if you suspect your blood sugar is low?

Follow the rule of 15 and 15: Eat or drink 15 grams of carbohydrate, wait 15 minutes, and recheck your blood sugar.

If you are still having symptoms, repeat the above treatment and get some help.

What has 15 grams of carb?  Half a glass of orange juice, 7 or 8 Lifesavers, 3 or 4 glucose tabs, a slice of bread, or a glass of milk. Have a meal or at least half a sandwich within an hour of experiencing a low blood sugar.

Ask yourself why you had a “low” and discuss the episode with your doctor.
