Potions

Potions

Lot of people are looking the perfect potion..  They are looking for something that can make them healthy without prescription pills and endless visits to the doctor.   Is there such a potion?  Probably not, but it might be a surprise that exercise is close to the magic potion people are looking for.  If you want a list of the diseases exercise can treat and prevent, I can give you a long list. It is a shorter list to give you a disease that doesn’t respond to exercise…none.  Okay I’ll admit broken bones may keep you from running a marathon.  But even with broken bones people get better faster with fewer complications if they don’t spend a lot of time in bed and start walking as soon as possible. Diabetes clearly can be prevented with exercise.  Exercise can clearly lower blood sugars 50 or more points with short walks.  Heart attacks, asthma, arthritis, depression, constipation, high blood pressure, stress, fibromyalgia..... you get the idea.

So can exercising really save you money too?.  Studies that look at healthy women in their mid 40’s that start exercising find that within five years the savings start.  The healthy exercising women saved $4,500 dollars a year in health care costs. The previously healthy non-exercising women spent a lot more on health care. What better excuse to buy a good pair of shoes?

Exercise is a powerful potion.  Is it a love potion?  Yes it is in many ways.  Many studies show that men that develop problems with their love life can have problems with blood flow to their delicate regions (G rated audiences can read too).  These changes can be reversed and prevented with daily exercise.  I can hear those laces getting tied now.

  • The estimated savings that a person with diabetes can receive from exercising daily and watching what they eat is about $40,000 in life time medical costs. Now that's a coupon! Diabetes can be considered a pre-existing condition that determines your healthcare premiums. Consider what you might save by preventing diabetes by walking even a little bit. It could be even more money.

  • Many people can drop one diabetes medicine by walking 30 minutes a day. Those immediate effects on the pocket book are always great. But the long term saving can be tremendous. Diabetics that exercise also save money by reducing the chances they could land in the hospital. They can also improve their cholesterol and their blood pressure. So that means less money spent on medications for those problems as well.

  • Interesting that you mentioned the money you can save by exercising. Ever heard of the Tightwad Gazette? It's all about how to get by on a shoe string (or a shoe lace). It says that 2 of the best bargains around are 1) a library card and 2) having a healthy life style, including exercising. When my patients with diabetes would tell me they just could not afford their medications and these same people were not exercising on a regular basis, I'd point out all the cost-saving benefits to mindful eating and regular exercise.
